Michael Stehr Art Lecture
“Soulful Stone: Sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini”
Jan. 17 at 6:30 pm
Artist and art historian Michael Stehr will continue his popular art lectures at the Piedmont Center for the Arts on Friday, January 17, with an illustrated lecture titled
"Soulful Stone: Sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.” The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 at the door.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini remains one of the great artistic talents in the history of Western art. Regarded as one of the founders of the Italian Baroque style, Bernini was paid the highest compliment when Pope Urban VIII dubbed him "the Michelangelo of his age." Like his great Florentine predecessor, Bernini has masterpieces in sculpture that are sprinkled about Rome.
A number of these pieces challenge what the viewer may think is possible with this cold, brittle material. His technical virtuosity is only matched by the spiritual energy that he infused into the work.
Come to the Center for the Arts for an illustrated lecture that takes the viewers through Rome to gather a greater understanding and appreciation for this hero of the Baroque.
